Today, Jaclynne Hamel, Ontario Liberal candidate for Sault Ste. Marie, released a statement on news that Algoma’s secured creditors, USW Local 2251, and USW Local 2724 have reached a tentative agreement.

“I am so pleased to see that a tentative agreement has been reached between Algoma’s secured creditors and the unions.

"The Ontario government has been deeply invested in the success of Algoma and Sault Ste. Marie.

"I know that all parties have been working hard to finalize an agreement, and I applaud their work and the work of the Ontario government to ensure that a beneficial deal was found. The provincial government has worked hard to encourage a private sector solution that will see the company move forward as a vibrant, growing operation contributing to the community.

"That is because Algoma is a vital part of our economy, both in Sault Ste. Marie and across Northern Ontario. Their presence in Sault Ste. Marie has meant good, well-paying jobs for thousands of people in our community.

"As our largest private-sector employer, I know that many people in this city have relied on Algoma, and I hope that this agreement brings more stability to our community.”

Quick facts

  • The Ontario Liberal government worked with Algoma and others through the CCAA process to support the best possible outcome for stakeholders.
  • Negotiations between the parties, facilitated by the Government of Ontario, have been taking place since 2015.
