Man wields golden shovel at federal facility (5 photos)

It’s National Tree Day, but one might have thought it was National Blackfly Day too as federal forestry employees swatted and squirmed through a tree-planting ceremony this morning.

It’s National Tree Day, but one might have thought it was National Blackfly Day too as federal forestry employees swatted and squirmed through a tree-planting ceremony this morning.

Flying pests did not, however, prevent the event from carrying on and David Nanang, director general of the Great Lakes Forestry Centre, planted a leafy new glenleven linden on GLFC soil.

Dan McKenney, from the centre’s economic analysis and geospatial tours group, gave a brief talk about plant hardiness zones while also showing off some of the stuff we humans make from trees.

LOCAL2 cameras were there too, so head on over to our sister site for more on tree day.
