Tyler Vernelli of Aurora’s Westside says he pretty much grew up on a bus as a hockey player, all the way from local rep hockey to the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

He’s now using the family business to help out all those affected by the tragedy involving players, staff and families of the Humboldt Broncos.

“I know what it’s like to be on that bus, to be on those teams, how close those guys are and the families, and I couldn’t imagine,” Vernelli said.

“They’re all your brothers, whether it be the coach, the waterboy, everybody’s part of that family.”

Proceeds from this month’s sales of the $10 punch cards that are sold locally by the two Aurora’s locations will now be going to the Broncos organization in order to help all those impacted by Friday’s collision that claimed the lives of 15 team members in Saskatchewan.

Vernelli says that three other local businesses have jumped on board with the fundraiser, including Soo Sports Excellence and the west side Pharmasave location.

“I called them and it was an instant yes for everybody,” Vernelli said. “Everybody wants to help out however they can.”

Aurora’s Westside will be using the proceeds from the all the punch cards the establishment has sold since the beginning of the month.

“Even if they don’t use the punch card, it’s ten dollars and it’s going to a good cause.”

Vernelli, who played two season for the Soo Thunderbirds, says that he’s seen quite a few hockey sticks gracing the front steps and porches of many houses in Sault Ste. Marie in honour of the Humboldt Broncos.

“I’ve seen quite a few around the community,” said Vernelli. “I think it hit home for a lot of people.”

He says that it’s nice to see the local hockey community come together for a good cause, and it’s hoped that people will contribute to Aurora’s fundraising efforts.

“Whatever we can do, at least we tried to contribute and help out.”
