Residential projects were rock stars of Sault’s 2024 building activity

303 new residential units were approved in 2024

Residential construction accounted for 980 of the 1,133 building permits issued by the City of Sault Ste. Marie last year, according to 2024 statistics released by the city's building staff.

The combined value of 2024 residential permits was $112 million, compared to $166 million for all sectors.

The city approved 303 new residential units in the year.

Here are the all-sector value totals for the previous four years:

  • 2023 – $148,000,000
  • 2022 – $259,000,000
  • 2021 – $211,000,000
  • 2020 –   $94,000,000

The following are the biggest construction projects approved last year:

  • 352-360 Northern Ave. East – $35 million, 108-unit apartment building
  • 130 Wellington St. East – $15 million conversion of commercial building to 59-unit apartment building
  • 1125 Pine St. – $10 million 47-unit apartment building
  • 599 Third Line West – $7.3 million for interior and exterior renovations to Isabel Fletcher Public School
  • 676 Second Line West – $5.2 million two-storey 11-unit apartment building
