The Sault Police Service has installed one of its closed-circuit television cameras at one of the city's busiest intersections – at Great Northern and Northern Avenue — but it is not yet operational.

"There are signs up, as we have a camera installed in the area as part of the CCTV program. Our CCTV cameras have been installed but they are not operational yet," said Lincoln Louttit, manager of corporate communications for the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

"We will communicate to the public when the program will become operational."

When the CCTV cameras were announced in October, Sault Police said the initiative will enhance public safety and prevent criminal activity.

"The CCTV network will be strategically positioned across the Sault Smart Grid, with cameras placed near long-term care and retirement facilities, at key intersections, and in other locations identified through a comprehensive analysis of calls for service," Sault Police said.

When the cameras were announced, Sault Police said they would not be monitored in real time, but instead used only by designated personnel who have access to the system.

"In addition to its role in crime prevention, the CCTV system will support investigations led by Patrol Services, Traffic Services, and Investigation Services," police said.

Signage posted near the intersection where the cameras were installed informs the public that they may be in a monitored zone.

The CCTV camera initiative was announced just over two years after the department installed Automatic Licence Plate Reader cameras at the far east and far north ends of the city.
