Some homes surrounded as Goulais River bursts its banks

Goulais Fire & Rescue Volunteers have used their watercraft to do head counts and ensure residents are safe

The Goulais River has burst its banks and, in some cases, is surrounding some Pine Shores Road-area properties with high water levels.

One week ago, the Ministry of Natural Resources issued a flood warning for the Goulais River watershed area. As snow in the bush continues to melt, the river has gotten faster, wider and deeper.

Parts of the Goulais Bay community are dealing with the effects of the rising water, including some roads being flooded, with some properties cut off. In some cases, the water levels are directly up to the homes.

Properties on Friendly Lane, the Olars Road subdivision and Byes Side Road are among the most affected, residents say.

Goulais Fire & Rescue Volunteers have used their watercraft to do head counts and ensure that residents are safe.

Rain is currently in the forecast for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, which has the potential to further affect the water level.
