Sault Ste. Marie has tweaked its traffic rules and there are important changes for those of us who drive or park on Wallace Terrace.
Perhaps the most difficult adjustment for local drivers will be a reduced speed limit between Korah Road and Allen Side Road.
"A recommendation of the Wallace Terrace environmental assessment, which studied a lane reduction or 'road diet' of Wallace Terrace, was to complete a speed review of the road with the new design elements," says Maggie McAuley, the city's municipal services and design engineer.
"Staff completed the review and concluded that the speed limit should be lowered from 60 km/hr to 50 km/hr," McAuley said.
The city has also added a new parking restriction on Wallace Terrace: Parking is now prohibited at all hours on both sides of Wallace Terrace from Korah Road to Brookfield Avenue.
At last week's city council meeting, councillors voted to remove a number of existing Wallace Terrace parking prohibitions from the books:
- a prohibition on parking on the north side of Wallace Terrace from Korah Road to Sixth Avenue at any time is now revoked
- a prohibition on parking on the north side of Wallace Terrace from Sixth Avenue to 46 metres east of Goulais Avenue from 1200 hours to 1700 hours is now revoked
- a 24/7 prohibition on parking at any time on the north side of Wallace Terrace from 46 metres east of Goulais Avenue to Goulais Avenue is now revoked
- a prohibition on parking at any time on the south side of Wallace Terrace from Korah Road to Glasgow Avenue is now revoked
- a prohibition on parking from Nov. 1 to April 30 on the north side of Wallace Terrace from Turner Avenue to Prentice is now revoked
Some changes have been made affecting nearby Goulais Avenue.
There's a new 24/7 parking restriction on both sides of Goulais Avenue from Second Line to Chippewa Street.
Removed from the books is an existing parking prohibition on the east side of Goulais Avenue from Second Line to the south limit of the W.J. McMeeken Centre property from 900 to 1000 hours and from 1400 hours to 1500 hours.
