The City of Sault Ste. Marie and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) recognized the economic impact and benefits of being a host gaming site with a cheque presentation.
OLG’s Chair of the Board of Directors, Jim Warren, and OLG’s President and CEO, Duncan Hannay presented the city with a cheque for $1,780,887, representing the City’s portion of gaming revenue from slots and live table games for the 2024-25 fiscal year. The City has received over $37 million for hosting Gateway Casinos Sault Ste. Marie since the casino opened in 1999. This revenue has been reinvested in the community, supporting asset management projects for several municipal facilities and alleviating the tax levy burden.
“I would like to thank the OLG for their continued support of our community. The revenue generated through our host gaming site agreement is pivotal in funding public services and community facilities. We appreciate the OLG's ongoing support and their employees' continued involvement in our community,” said Mayor Matthew Shoemaker.
“OLG is proud to have contributed to successes in the Sault Ste. Marie region for over 30 years,” said Duncan Hannay, OLG’s President and CEO. “Sharing a portion of the gaming revenue with the City since the casino opened in 1999 has enhanced the quality of life in Sault Ste. Marie.
"For the last 50 years, since the organization’s start in 1975, 100 per cent of OLG profits have been reinvested in Ontario to support provincial priorities, for the betterment of all the people of this province. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the hardworking team at Gateway Casinos Sault Ste. Marie for their invaluable contribution. Just as OLG has done since we have arrived in the Soo in the early 1990’s, we will always be here to support this strong and resilient community.”
The City of Sault Ste. Marie looks forward to further strengthening the community by working closely with partners like OLG.
