Bawating gathers win in Vetrie opener

Featuring all six local high school senior boys basketball teams and six other top teams from the around the province, the tournament opened with six games on three fronts featuring all 12 teams in action on Thursday night.

At St. Mary's, Bawating scored the opening win with a 52-44 decision over the Sir James Dunn Eagles. D.J. Wright led the Braves attack with 31 points while Mark Schilbroth and Austin Kent replied for the Eagles with 13 each.

Toronto's Father Henry Carr followed Bawating's win with 51-42 victory over the St. Mary's Knights. Kerchel Carter and Lamar Robinson scored 10 each for Henry Carr while Pat Murray paced the Knights with 14 points and Wes Ontonovich added 10.

At St. Basil, Webster Cole with 19 points and Dave Hohig with 10 paced Sarnia Northern past the St. Basil Saints 56-53. Mike Olivera led the Saints with 22 points.

In the second game, Toronto's Mother Teresa used 15 points from Justin Dennis and 11 from Andre Bell to defeat Sudbury Lo-Ellen 64-37.

At Korah, Timmins defeated the host Korah Colts 57-29. Francis Massicotte led Timmins with 14 points while Brenden Latarelle added 11. Christian Johnson paced the Colts with 13 points while Jourdan Morin added 10.

In another game, LaSalle thumped the White Pines Wolverines 96-32 as Matt Weimer led the Wolverines with eight points.

Action continues on Friday with all six local schools hosting games for students beginning at 2 p.m. before the teams play again on Friday evening.

St. Mary's hosts Mother Teresa at 2 p.m. and Lo-Ellen at 7:15 p.m. while Korah hosts Sarnia at 2 p.m. and LaSalle at 8:45 p.m. Sir James Dunn battles Lo-Ellen at home at 2 p.m. followed by a match with Henry Carr at 7:15 p.m. at Korah.

St. Basil will entertain LaSalle at 2 p.m. before meeting White Pines at Bawating at 8:45 p.m. White Pines plays host to Timmins at 2 p.m. Bawating hosts Father Henry Carr at 2 p.m. and Mother Teresa at 7:15 p.m.

In another game Friday, Sarnia meets Timmins at 8:45 p.m. at St. Mary's.

The tournament concludes on Saturday at Korah with the consolation final at 3:45 p.m., the third place game at 6 p.m. and the championship game at 7:30 p.m.
