HELP FOR HOUND GOALIES

John Vanbiesbrouck is a former goalie with impeccable credentials. But the new coach/general manager of the Soo Greyhounds -- a time-honoured veteran of the National Hockey League -- has a lot on his plate as he readies for his first season behind an Ontario Hockey League bench. Thus, Vanbiesbrouck has hired Sault native Terry Barbeau as the Hounds' goalie coach. Barbeau, a Canada Post worker, has had previous success as a high-level goalie coach. While at Lake Superior State three years ago, Barbeau, as the Lakers' goalie coach, was credited with the development of junior goalie Jayme Platt. It was Scott Borek -- then head coach of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Lakers -- who singled out Barbeau for his work with Platt, who became an all-American. Barbeau's duties with the Hounds will be strictly related to working with the goalies. The Hounds return a pair of untested backups, Brock McGillis and Jeff Weber, next season. Barbeau has also worked as a private tutor to Ryan MIller, who played Jr. A hockey with the Soo Indians before going on to become an award-winning goalie with the CCHA Michigan State Spartans. Miller is considered to be the top goaltending prospect of the NHL Buffalo Sabres.
