Brad Jacobs continues to roll at the 2019 Tim Hortons Brier in Brandon, Man.
Jacobs and his Northern Ontario mates improved to 4-0 on Monday thanks to a 10-4 victory in eight ends over Prince Edward Island’s John Likely.
The Jacobs rink, which includes third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden, lead Ryan Harnden and fifth Lee Toner, rode a quick start to the victory.
Jacobs scored a pair in the opening end with the hammer and proceeded to steal one in the second end to take an early 3-0 lead.
After Likely got on the board with a single in the third end, Jacobs tacked on two more in the fourth.
After the teams traded singles in the subsequent ends before Likely cut Jacobs’ lead to 6-4 before the Northern Ontario rink sealed the win with four in the eighth end.
The Jacobs rink is the only remaining unbeaten team in Pool A at the nine-day event.
“It’s still very early in the event,” Fry said in an interview with Curling Canada. “Every win you can get is obviously a step closer to making the playoffs so we’re happy with that but by no means is it the end of the road yet.”
With games set at 10 ends, all four wins have seen the Jacobs rink win in eight ends and Fry called it a positive in what can be a grueling event.
“It’s great anytime you can get a few quick games in,” Fry said. “Especially with such a long, grueling week. This is a marathon so as much energy as you can save over the course of the (tournament), we’ll take it.”
The tournament features 16 teams separated into two pools.
The top four teams in each pool advance to the Championship Pool, which begins on Thursday.
The top four remaining teams will then advance to the page playoff on Saturday.
Semifinal and final action are set for Sunday.
Jacobs is set to return to action on Tuesday with a pair of games.
In Tuesday’s morning draw, Jacobs will face Saskatchewan’s Kirk Muyers at 10 a.m. before wrapping up the day in the evening draw against Manitoba’s Mike McEwen.
