A big end was the difference for Brad Jacobs and his team from the Community First Curling Centre in Sault Ste. Marie on Thursday.

After surrendering a third end steal of one, Jacobs proceeded to score four in the fourth end en route to a 9-4 win over Steve Laycock to improve to 3-0 at the first Grand Slam of Curling event of the season, the Tour Challenge, in Regina, Sask.

The win sealed a spot in the quarter-finals for the Jacobs rink after a pair of wins on Thursday.

The Jacobs rink opened the day with a 7-5 win over Reid Carruthers of Winnipeg, Man. in the afternoon draw.

With Jacobs leading by one in the eighth end and Carruthers holding the hammer, Carruthers would wreck a guard with his final shot to give Jacobs a steal of one and the victory. The loss eliminated Carruthers from playoff contention as the Manitoba-based rink fell to 0-3 heading into Thursday’s evening draw.

The Jacobs rink, which includes third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden, and lead Ryan Harnden, wraps up round robin action on Friday in the morning draw against Norwegian Steffen Walstad.

The playoff round is slated to begin with quarter-final action on Saturday with the Tier 1 championship set for Sunday.

The Tour Challenge features 60 teams split into two tiers. 15 men’s and 15 women’s teams comprise Tier 1 with all the teams coming from the World Curling Tour’s Order of Merit.

Tier 2 also features 15 teams in each of the men’s and women’s divisions.

The Tier 1 champions receive an automatic berth in the final Grand Slam of Curling event of the season, the Champions Cup, which includes the winners of all of the major curling events throughout the season.

The Tier 2 champions earn a spot in the second Grand Slam of Curling event of the season, the Masters, which is set to be held in Loydminster, Sask., beginning on Oct. 24.
