The St. Mary’s Knights will move on the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAA hockey championship.
The Knights used a late goal to force overtime before Noah Brule scored in the extra frame to give the Knights a 3-2 victory over the Confederation Chargers of Sudbury in the Northern Ontario Secondary School Association (NOSSA) AAA tournament in North Bay.
Confederation held a 2-1 lead in the final minute of play before Cole Ryckman scored for the Knights to tie the contest with 29 seconds to go in regulation time.,
The Knights and Chargers used their round robin game Tuesday morning as the tournament championship as the two clubs had already earn berths in the championship with 2-0 records on Monday.
Ryan Fournier and Lucas Sprack scored for Confederation.
St. Mary’s picked up wins over Algonquin Barons and Scollard Hall Bears, both of North Bay, on Monday
The Knights will play in the AAA OFSAA tournament, set to open on Mar. 21 in St. Catharines.
Locally, the Superior Heights Steelhawks dropped a 3-0 decision to Sudbury’s St. Charles Cardinals in the championship game of the AA NOSSA tournament.
Matthew Belanger’s goal late in the second period was the game-winner while Michael Morrier also scored. Belanger scored into an empty net in the final minute of play to cap the scoring.
After dropping its tournament opener to St. Charles, the Steelhawks picked up a pair of victories to earn a spot in the final, beating the Chippewa Raiders of North Bay and the Sault’s other representative, the Korah Colts.
St. Charles finished the round robin with a 3-0 record and will play in the AA OFSAA on Mar. 21 in Collingwood, Ont.
