Knights and Colts unbeaten in NOSSA hockey

St. Mary's picked up a pair of wins at the AAA event while Korah has a win and a tie at the AA tournament

The St. Mary’s Knights are in the drivers’ seat heading into day two of the Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics (NOSSA) AAA hockey championship locally.

The Knights capped off day one on Monday night with a 5-0 win over CASS at the GFL Memorial Gardens.

Knights goaltender Travis Johnson picked up the shutout while Josh Gavey paced the team offensively with a pair of goals.

Colby Arbour, Caden Caputo, and Dale Armstrong had the other goals for the Knights.

Josh Mannarino assisted on three goals for St. Mary’s.

After opening the day with a loss, Horizon of Sudbury picked up an 8-5 win over Confederation of Sudbury.

Caleb Rainville had a pair of goals for Horizon while Nikolas Lebuis assisted on three goals for Horizon.

Ben Lacroix and Cameron Mundy had a goal and an assist each while Bryce Brunet, Andrew Demers, Eric Frappier, and Eric Bourassa also scored for Horizon.

Christian Gaudreau had two goals and an assist for Confederation.

Ethan Boyd and Landon Thompson chipped in with a goal and an assist each while Aiden Chymlak had the other Confederation goal.

In Monday’s early games, CASS skated to a 4-2 win over Confederation thanks to a pair of goals from Austin Mortimore.

Mason Mortimore chipped in with a goal and an assist while Kayne Mortimore assisted on a pair of goals.

Spencer Osborne had the other CASS goal.

Gaudreau and Michael Calvank scored for Confederation.

St. Mary’s opened the tournament with a 6-2 win over Horizon.

Arbour paced the Knights with two goals and an assist in the victory.

Kyle Finateri also had a pair of goals. Mannarino had a goal and an assist for the Knights.

Jacob Bumbaco also scored for St. Mary’s.

Bourassa and Lacroix scored for Horizon.

Tournament action continues on Tuesday morning as Hroizon faces CASS at 9 a.m. and St. Mary’s faces Confederation at 10:30 a.m.

The tournament championship is set for 7 p.m.

All three games are at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

At the AA NOSSA tournament in Sudbury, the Korah Colts opened action on Monday with a 2-2 tie against Sudbury’s St. Charles.

The Colts needed a late power play goal to pick up the tie and erased an early 2-0 deficit in the contest.

St. Charles scored a pair of goals in the opening period to take the lead before the Colts battled back.

In the evening game, Korah picked up a 3-1 win over Algonquin of North Bay.
