The lone loss for the St. Mary’s Knights at the Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics (NOSSA) AAA hockey championship came at a tough time.
After going 3-0 through round robin play, the Knights dropped a 5-2 decision to Horizon from Sudbury in the title game of the two-day tournament that wrapped up locally on Tuesday.
Cameron Mundy scored three times for Horizon, including what was the eventual game-winner late in the second period.
Cody Lauzon and Mathieu Poliquin had the other goals for Horizon while goaltender Blake Barnard was solid in goal.
Colby Arbour had a goal and an assist for the Knights.
Dale Armstrong had the other Knights goal.
The Knights capped off the round robin portion of the tournament with a 4-3 win over Confederation.
Armstrong had two goals and an assist for St. Mary’s while Josh Mannarino added a goal and an assist.
Christian Alfano had the other St. Mary’s goal.
Ryan Frappier had a pair of goals for Confederation. Colton Blay had a goal and two assists while Parker Bertrand assisted on all three goals for Confederation.
Horizon advanced to the final with a 4-2 round robin win over CASS in Tuesday morning’s other game.
Ben Laroux had a pair of goals for Horizon while Mundy and Eric Frappier had the other goals for Horizon.
Spencer Osborne and Kayne Mortimore scored for CASS.
With the win, Horizon advances to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) AAA championship in Barrie, which begins on March 19.
In the AA NOSSA tournament in Sudbury, the Korah Colts picked up a morning win over Lo-Ellen of Sudbury to earn a spot in the tournament final against St. Charles, also of Sudbury.
Korah and St. Charles would trade late goals before St. Charles picked up the win in overtime to advance from NOSSA to the AA OFSAA tournament in Kincardine, which begins on March 19.
