Sault Ste. Marie product Aidan Wright will lead the Lake Superior State Lakers hockey team when it takes to the ice this weekend to open the new college hockey season.
The local product was named captain of the Lakers on Tuesday as he heads into his senior season at the school.
The 5-foot-10, 185-pound defenceman is coming off a junior season that saw him pick up a goal and seven points in 36 games as a mainstay on the Lakers blueline.
Wright was named a 2016-17 American Hockey Coaches Association (ACHA) All-American Scholar and has played in 114 career games since joining the Laker program prior to the 2014-15 season.
Wright is one of four seniors set to play with the Lakers this season.
“We had one senior last season so it's great to have four seniors who will be a a valuable part of our leadership corps,” said Lakers Coach Damon Whitten. “Each of these guys leads in different ways and all of them will prove to be a valuable asset for our coaching staff.”
The other seniors on the Lakers roster include defencemen Ryan Renz and Kyle Chatham and forward J.T. Henke.
The Lakers open the 2017-18 schedule on Sunday afternoon with an exhibition game against the Laurentian Voyageurs. The team opens regular season action on Oct. 6 against Western Collegiate Hockey Association opponent Northern Michigan in the first game of a weekend home-and-home series
