Local skiers continue medal performances

Tackling their home course, members of the Searchmont Ski Runners have turned in some fine performances at the Mealey Classic at the Searchmont Resort.

On Friday, Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick led the local squad as she captured the gold medal in the women's giant slalom. In the two race event, Fitzpatrick, a 14 year-old K2 competitor, posted a combined time of 1 minute, 21.42 seconds to capture top honours.

Another member of the Ski Runners, Gillian Scott, captured the bronze medal for her third medal performance in as many races. Mindy Blumberg, from Thunder Bay's Norwesters Alpine Club, won the silver.

In the men's K2 event, Alex Mosher of the Ski Runners won the bronze medal while Richard Love and Cameron Day from the Craigleith Ski Club won the gold and silver medals, respectively.

Two members of the host team won medals in the girl's K1 division for 11 and 12 year-old competitors. Meghan DiAngelo won the silver medal while Madison Irwin captured her third bronze medal in three races. Craigleith's Marissa Riopelle won the gold.

On the boys side, Searchmont's George Payne won the bronze medal behind Craigleith's Philip Brown and silver medalist Mike Welton from Collingwood's Osler Bluff team.

In the overall standings, Lauren Bobby took the women's gold while Riopelle and Fitzpatrick finished second and third, respectively. Brown took the men's gold with second going to Love and third to Welton.

Another Giant Slalom will be staged on Saturday with the event concluding on Sunday with a dual slalom.
