With Ontario Hockey League training camps in full swing, NHL prospect tournaments are approaching and teams are beginning to announce the list of players that will be participating.
Among the players that have earned invites as free agents are a quartet of players with ties to Sault Ste. Marie.
Garden River’s Owen Headrick, who won an OHL title last season with the Erie Otters, is slated to join the Boston Bruins as prospect for the organization compete in the 2017 Prospects Challenge in Buffalo, beginning on Sept. 8.
Headrick joined the Otters shortly after the OHL trade deadline last season after leaving the Lake Superior State Lakers and helped the Otters en route to an OHL title and a trip to the MasterCard Memorial Cup final in Windsor.
Headrick had four goals and eight points in 26 regular season games with the Otters and added four assists in 22 playoff games.
Soo Greyhounds defenceman Mac Hollowell will join Carolina Hurricanes prospects in Traverse City for a prospects tournament also beginning on Sept. 8. How much he’ll be able to do while there hasn’t been confirmed after he suffered a broken left fibula during the Toronto Maple Leafs rookie camp during the summer.
Hollowell is entering his third full season with the Greyhounds after scoring three goals and 23 points in 63 games last season.
Greyhounds netminder Joseph Raaymakers, who is not in camp as he awaits a trade, is set to participate in a prospects tournament in Florida beginning on Sept. 9 with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Raaymakers posted a 3.38 goals against average and a 0.889 save percentage in 41 regular season games before posting a 1.95 GAA and 0.942 save percentage in 10 playoff games.
Former Greyhounds forward Bobby MacIntyre, who led the team in scoring with 28 goals and 80 points in 63 games as an overage player last season, will be in Traverse City with prospects of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The 20-year-old signed an American Hockey League contract with the Blue Jackets affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters, last week.
