Fourteen talented archers from across the Sault and Algoma region proudly represented their schools and community at the prestigious Great Lakes Archery Invitational Tournament, held on May 14 in Richmond Hill, Ont.
Competing among over 200 top high school archers from across the province, these young athletes showcased incredible skill, focus, and sportsmanship.
Participants ranged in age from 14 to 18, representing Superior Heights Collegiate & Vocational School, Central Algoma Secondary School, Korah Collegiate & Vocational School, and White Pines Collegiate & Vocational School.
Each archer had to earn their spot through school-level qualifications, making their participation in this elite event a notable achievement in itself.
In the Female Compound category, the Algoma region celebrated several strong finishes:
- Kaitlyn Brown (Korah C&VS) – 6th place
- Claire Gould (Superior Heights) – 5th place
- Delia McCarthy (Superior Heights) – 4th place
- Lochlyn Good (Central Algoma) – 3rd place
In the Male Compound category, local archers once again hit the mark:
- Keegan McAuley (Superior Heights) – 6th place
- Colton McBride (Central Algoma) – 5th place
- Karson Young (Central Algoma) – 4th place
- Aaron Galka (Central Algoma) – 3rd place
- Jude Santa Maria (Superior Heights) – 1st place
Congratulations to Jude Santa Maria, whose focused effort and steady aim earned him a gold medal, finishing 23 points ahead of second place. This was Jude’s first appearance at GLAIT, and as a Grade 9 student, his achievement is especially impressive.
In team standings, Superior Heights C&VS took home silver, while Central Algoma Secondary School earned a well-deserved gold! With only a 15 point spread out of a possible 2400 between the two teams, it was an exciting finish for both schools.
Additional archers who represented their schools with pride and determination include: Lautaro Harmsen, Ethan Paquin, Alexis Knox, of Superior Heights, Ella Koivisto of Central Algoma, and Ceanna Churchill of White Pines.
Each of these students contributed to an exciting and memorable tournament experience. Notable support came from ADSB Chaperone Melissa Santa Maria and Central Algoma Coach Steve McBride.
Local coaches Lana Perry and Jacob McEachern from Arrows in Motion who coach athletes from all of the area's schools expressed their pride in all participating archers.
“We’re thrilled to see so much talent and passion for the sport coming from our region,” said Perry. “With our new club location opening this fall at 33 Nichol Ave. in Sault Ste. Marie, we hope to welcome even more youth into the sport.”
Arrows In Motion is hosting an intro to archery night for high school students and those entering high school this fall, on June 8 from 7:30-8:30 pm for $25 at Algoma Rod and Gun Club.
All levels of experience are welcome. Equipment will be available for those who don't have their own. To sign up, or for more information about archery opportunities in the Algoma region, please contact arrowsinmotion@hotmail.com.
