Sault hosts first provincial karate tournament in over 30 years

The event featured more than 70 participants from across the province

Last weekend, the Sault Ste. Marie International Karate Daigaku (SSM IKD) hosted a provincial karate tournament, the first event of its kind locally in over three decades.

The day-long competition, held at the Days Inn, featured more than 70 participants from across Ontario, including athletes from Toronto, Bruce Mines, and the local community.

A special guest for the tournament was Shihan Maureen Woon-A-Tai, a 9th Dan who oversaw the event.

The tournament featured divisions for all ages and abilities, including Tiny Tigers (ages 4–6), youth and teen competitors across various belt levels, adults, a masters division, and a dedicated category for athletes with special needs.

“This is more than a competition—it’s a celebration of perseverance, inclusion, and growth in martial arts,” said Sensei Chris Troch, owner and head instructor.

“We’re especially proud to highlight divisions for our youngest competitors and our students with special needs.”

International Karate Daigaku will host the nationals in October.
