NEWS RELEASE
SOO FINNISH NORDIC SKI CLUB
********************************
One of the Sault’s prime natural assets is the Hiawatha Highlands Conservation Area on the northern edge of the city. Here the Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club operates 50 km of professionally groomed cross country ski trails. Established in the 1900s by the area’s ardent Finnish immigrants, the club has trained star athletes and hosted key Nordic competitions and events. Starting at age 4 in the Bunny Rabbits program, kids and youth are introduced to the fun and skills of both recreational and competitive Nordic skiing.
As a registered club of Nordiq Canada and Cross Country Ski Ontario, the club consists of over 400 members who create opportunities to promote cross country skiing to people of all ages and abilities, including year-round youth programming, adult lessons, educational and social events. The club collaborates with and supports local partners and land owners to maintain winter recreation trails, and grooms 50 km of cross country ski trails, 14 km of snowshoe trails, and nine km of fat bike trails with the help of its business, Hiawatha Highlands.
None of which is possible without the enthusiastic participation of the hundreds of club members and volunteers: these folks help deliver the club’s broad slate of skill development, training and recreational programming. Through child and youth programs, coaching, and events, SFNSC introduces kids to the sport, providing outdoor fun, building skill levels and offering professional coaching at all race levels through to adult and seniors divisions. Programs also cover Biathlon and ParaNordic training.
Planning and management of Nordic programs and operations is the mandate of the SFNSC Board of Directors. The Board guides the club’s Executive Committee, which executes the Board’s planning decisions. The group is currently seeking new board members for the 2025/2026 season. If you are a Nordic skier interested in expanding kids’ introduction to this wonderful winter activity, as well as the training of aspiring high-performance racers...and particularly if you have fundraising, legal, business and/or event-planning experience, the club welcomes your application. Our intent in the upcoming season is to expand our Jackrabbit and racing programs.
Interested applicants can visit soofinnishnordic.com for board member information. Ask questions or submit your application by emailing sfnpresident@gmail.com by May 26.
