The Sault Ste. Marie Aquatic Club took a 17-member squad to Sudbury and captured second place overall at the East Side Mario's Long Course Invitational swim meet on the weekend.
SSMAC finished just 40 points behind the hosts for the overall championship despite having half the number of swimmers.
Twelve year-old Kyle Matthews had a huge weekend for SSMAC with eight first place finishes in eight races.
Jeff Byrne, a 16 year-old swimmer, also had a big weekend with four victories and two second place results.
Double winners included Blaine Dolcetti, Shannon Hazelton, Joshua Lawrence and Theo Theodossiou. Julia DeFelice and Cait Tomlinson each won a race.
"I am so proud of the way all the athletes swam and competed," said SSMAC head coach Rob Moreside.
"It was a wonderful weekend and the close final team results shows the strength of our team. Many swimmers qualified for finals, recording points for the team."
Top three results were posted by Jen Dailey, Samantha Filek, Chelsea Griswold, Sarah Theodossiou and Julia Turgeon.
SSMAC will now prepare for the upcoming long course championships in Sudbury in June.
