The St. Mary's Knights shook off the holiday rust and won three consecutive games to claim the third annual Junior Boys Cougar Classic basketball tournament at Sault College on Sunday.
The two-day tournament featured junior boys entries from all six local high schools along with the Central Algoma Secondary School Huskies and the Junior Cougars grade nine rep team.
In the final, Jon Mullin poured in a game high 19 points to lead the Knights past the St. Basil Saints 46-31. Mark Devuono added eight points for the winners while Andrew King, Ryan Gaines and Sean Speckman replied with eight points each for the Saints.
St. Mary's advanced to the championship with a 42-37 win over the White Pines Wolverines in one semi-final. Mullin scored 24 points in the win while Andrew Baziuk added 10. Jake Doan led the Wolverines with 18 points.
St. Basil won their semi-final game 39-29 over the Sir James Dunn Eagles as Gains and King scored 13 points each. Mike Kreutzweiser added 10 for the winners while Jamie Weldon scored nine and Navarre Cellini eight for the Eagles.
In the third place game, Doan's 16 points, Nick Shoust's 11 and Jon Widgett's 10 points led White Pines past Sir James Dunn 47-37. Weldon replied with 14 for the Eagles.
The Korah Colts won the consolation championship by edging CASS 47-46. Robbie Calvert scored 17 points for the Colts while Jordan Murtonen added nine. Rob Hurley led the Huskies with 18 points while Jeremy Hodgson added 15.
In the seventh place game, the Junior Cougars beat the Bawating Braves 56-27 as Chris Hunt led the Cougars with 13 points and Josh Martella added 11. Kevin McCarthy replied with nine for the Braves.
On Sunday afternoon, Sault College held a senior boys division all-star game with representatives divided evenly to form an East and West squad.
The West beat the East 96-91 on the strength of 20 points from St. Basil's Josh Marasco. Other top scorers from the West included St. Mary's Wes Ontonovich with 19 points, Korah's Christian Johnson with 18, SJD's Trevor Laforrest with 13, SJD's Austin Kent with 12 and White Pine's Matt Premo with 10.
Bawating's D.J. Wright led the East with 33 points. St. Mary's Patrick Murray and Jordan Forbes scored 13 each while White Pines' Noah Rushon and SJD's Mark Schildroth added 10 each.
Other all-stars included Mike Oliveira and Bryan Picco from St. Basil, Bawating's Kyle Gauthier, White Pines' Ryan Maunu along with Korah's Jourdan Morin and Tyson Vanderloo.
