Stage set for girls hoop semi-finals

After three quarterfinal match-ups in the junior division on Tuesday, the pairings have been set for the High School Girls Basketball League semi-finals.

In junior, the Mount St. Joseph College Royals won a date with first place St. Mary's in one semi-final after the Royals defeated the White Pines Wolverines 58-37 on Tuesday.

The St. Basil Saints earned a spot in the other semi-final after edging the Bawating Braves 37-33. The Saints will battle the Korah Colts, which rolled past the Sir James Dunn Eagles 40-12.

Vanessa Chaimbrone scored 24 points to lead the Royals in their win while Miriam Pinder replied with 13 for the Wolverines. Brittany Hogan and Angie Dobbs scored eight points each for the Colts while Karli Campbell paced the Eagles with four points.

Abby DiDonato led the Saints with 22 points while Courtney Dubas added five. Amanda Whitmell replied with 11 and LaToya Busque 10 for the Braves.

Thursday's junior semi-finals will tip off at 4:15 p.m. St. Mary's will play on home court while Korah and St. Basil will play a neutral site game at Bawating.

Without quarterfinals scheduled in the senior division, the semi-final match-ups have already been determined.

Third place Korah visits St. Mary's while first place St. Basil will host the Bawating Braves. Both games will tip off at 6 p.m.

The semi-final winners will meet for the City Championship on Saturday night at a site yet to be determined. The junior game begins at 6 p.m. followed by the senior contest at 7:30 p.m.

A fund raising banquet for the Guy Vetrie Invitational Tournament, formerly the Sault Invitational, is being held Wednesday, November 26 at the Marconi Club. The doors open at 6 p.m. with the dinner to follow at 6:30 p.m.
