Several SSMAC Standouts at Eastside Mario's

The Sault Ste. Marie Aquatic Club kicked off the long-course portion of its season over the weekend in strong fashion with a performance that signals the strength of the team for years to come.

SSMAC challenged the Cobras from Brampton in the Eastside Mario's meet in Sudbury before the Southern Ontario club pulled away to win the competition. SSMAC had a 24-member contingent compared to the Cobras significantly larger roster.

SSMAC was led by high-point trophy wins by Shannon Hazelton in the 15-and over-female competition and Blaine Dolcetti in the 15-and-over male action.

Alexandra Tracy, Becky Day, and Wendy Oleskiw won the girls' high point trophies for SSMAC in the 10 and under, the 11-12 and the 13-14 age ranges respectively.

Brian Lee was third in the high points race in the boys' 11-12 competition as was Christopher Carlyle in the boys' 10 and under action. Sarah Theodossiou was third in high points in the girls' 11-12 age range.

Coach Bill Park was delighted with the outcome.

"Almost every swimmer had a best time, especially at the younger age ranges," he says. "As a team, we swam exceptionally well. To put it into perspective, the team that finished first had 13 more swimmers than we had entered."

The host Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club had 60 athletes participating. Other teams were the Soo Y Dolphins, the Valley East Waves, and entries from Kirkland Lake, Sturgeon Falls, Midland, and North Bay.

Meet results mean a number of swimmers will qualify for regional and provincial competition.
