The Sault Surge Aquatic Team recently hosted the 2025 Superior Shores Challenge Cup.
The event, held at the John Rhodes pool, featured nine teams and 190 swimmers.
A total of 73 local swimmers each contributing points towards local entry's total of 6,231 points, helping the Surge win the event and keep the Challenge Cup in the Club's trophy case.
The Thunder Bay Thunderbolts, with 3,848 points, finished second while the Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club placed third with 3,369 points.
Local swimmers who finished high in their respective events included:
Sophia Li, 13, earning gold medals in six individual events in the 13-14 girls field. Balin Evans, 9, placed first in five individual events in the boys 10/under age group.
Andrew Li picked up gold in four individual events along with swimming to his 2nd Ontario Championships qualification in the 200m backstroke earning his entry into the meet. Swimmers must have qualified into two individual events to earn entry into the summer provincial championship meet.
Eva Moreau, 12, picked up three individual event wins, including a provincial qualification time in the 200m breaststroke. Moreau just missed her second qualification by less than a second in the 100m breaststroke while swimming to victory in that event in the girls 11-12 age group. Brie Reid placed atop the medal podium three times.
Brie Reid, 15, Angela Thomson, 12, Asher Leask, 9, also earned gold medals in three individual events.
Blake Kriven, 10, and Elsan Mackay reached the top of the podium twice in their respective age groups.
Bo Mackay, 8, Emma Vallee, 13, Quinn Hayes, 10, all swam well and earned multiple top eight finishes along with a gold medal each in their respective age groups.
The boys 11-12 age group earned relay victories in the 4x50 medley and freestyle relays. The team included William Paraniuk, Judah Erickson, Adam Abassy, and Spencer Smith.
The Surge girls 15 and over 4x50 medley relay claimed top spot as well. The team included Eva Robinson, Reid, Alma Da Silva Castillejo, and Haylen Leonard.
The Sault Surge continue to train with a trip to compete at the Thunder Bay Thunderbolt Invitational meet at the end of May and Provincials set for July at the Toronto Pan Am Aquatic and Sports Centre.
