‘Terrific Twelve’ does the Sault proud in Special Olympics, wins a ton of medals (2 photos)

Closing ceremonies for 2019 Special Olympics Ontario Provincial Winter Games took place Saturday

Though no stranger to competing and winning medals in Special Olympics competition, the Sault’s Kristen Bonenfant is happy she and her teammates took the bronze medal in curling at the 2019 Special Olympics Ontario Provincial Winter Games held in the Sault Friday and Saturday.

Speaking to SooToday at closing ceremonies held at the Sault Community Theatre Centre Saturday evening, Bonenfant said she was happy to be a mentor to her fellow curlers.

“For some of them, it was their first provincials, ever,” Bonenfant said.

While Bonenfant and fellow Sault curlers Josh Chartrand, Vince Coccimiglio and brothers Nathan and Shevy Harman took bronze, Miguel Bedard won two bronze medals in snowshoeing, with Brandon Fortin winning a gold and a bronze in the same sport.

Rob Lewis won three golds in cross country skiing, while his fellow cross country skiers Quinn Pleau MacWilliam, Rachelle Barbeau and Jason Lemcke also did well (MacWilliam with a silver and bronze, Barbeau one gold and three silvers and Lemcke with three silvers and a bronze), while Carter Simpson competed in Alpine Skiing at Searchmont.

The games, held at various venues throughout the Sault and area, included Special Olympians from across Ontario, with 600 volunteers helping make the event a reality.
