Three unanswered goals lead Thunderbirds

Trailing by a pair of goals, the Soo Thunderbirds battled all the way back to remain unbeaten

A big third period helped the Soo Thunderbirds remain unbeaten on Friday night.

Trailing by a pair of goals through 40 minutes, the Thunderbirds scored three unanswered goals to beat the Rayside Balfour Canadians 3-2 on Friday at the John Rhodes Community Centre in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.

Noah Boman scored at 4:27 of overtime to lift the Thunderbirds to the victory, their sixth consecutive win to start the NOJHL season.

Boman finished the night with a pair of goals. 

Nick Smith scored a power play marker in the opening minute of the third period to get the Thunderbirds on the scoreboard.

Lucas Theriault had three assists for the Thunderbirds, giving him 13 points in six games this season. 

William Anderson stopped 26 shots for the Thunderbirds.

Giordano Biondi had both goals for the Canadians. Kyle Liinamaa assisted on both Rayside goals.

Goaltender David Bowen made 45 saves for Rayside.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Saturday night when they take to the ice at Pullar Stadium in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. to face the Soo Eagles. 

Next home action for the Thunderbirds is on Oct. 6 when the team hosts the Espanola Express in a 7 p.m. start at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

On Thursday, the Thunderbirds announced the acquisition of forward Matthew Bazarin from the Ontario Junior League’s Stoufville Spirit in exchange for a player development fee.

Bazarin did not play in Friday’s game against Rayside.
