The Soo Thunderbirds continue to be one of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s hottest teams.
Sitting atop the NOJHL’s West Division standings as well as the overall standings, the Thunderbirds extended its winning streak to seven games on Friday night thanks to a narrow 4-3 victory over the Blind River Beavers at the John Rhodes Community Centre.
Goals by Nick Smith and Kaidan McDonald in the third period broke a 2-2 tie for the home side.
Matthew Bazarin and Nate Medaglia also scored for the Thunderbirds in the win.
McDonald finished the night with a goal and an assist while Noah Boman assisted on a pair of Thunderbirds goals.
Sault goaltender Colin Ahern made 17 saves.
Blind River netminder Jackson Hjelle was busy, making 39 saves in the contest, including 20 in the second period alone.
Brendan Young had a goal and an assist for Blind River while Sam Harris and Sault product Justin Mauro also scored.
The Thunderbirds improve to 33-9-0-1 with the win while Blind River falls to 21-16-4-1.
Earlier in the week, Camden Findlay had a pair of goals as the Thunderbirds picked up a 5-4 win on home ice against the Elliot Lake Wildcats on Tuesday night.
Brendan Miller and Bracy Caruso had a goal and an assist each in the win over Elliot Lake while Smith also picked up a goal.
Ahern made 23 stops in that contest.
Noah Minns scored three times for Elliot Lake.
Caleb Minns and Eric Conley assisted on three goals each while Connor Taylor also had a goal for the Wildcats.
Goaltender Dominic Boily stopped 36 shots for Elliot Lake.
The Thunderbirds and Wildcats are set to meet again on Sunday night in Elliot Lake.
