Thunderbirds ride hot start to road win

A strong start lifted the Soo Thunderbirds to a victory on Saturday night.

In the midst of a three-game road trip, the Thunderbirds scored four times in the opening period en route to a 6-4 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory over the Powassan Voodoos.

Nick Smith had a goal and three assists to pace the Thunderbirds offensively.

Lucas Theriault, Noah Boman, and Matthew Bazarin chipped in with a goal and an assist.

Spencer Van Tiem and Brady Caruso also scored.

Colin Ahern stopped 25 shots.

Carson Lux, Cade Herd, David Campbell, and Max Newnam scored for Powassan.

Joe Vrbetic got the start in goal for Powassan and surrendered three goals on 11 shots before being pulled. Christian Cicigoi entered the game and stopped 34 shots the rest of the way.

The Thunderbirds will take a 27-9-0-1 record into action on Sunday afternoon in Noelville when they face the French River Rapids.
