A pair of third period goals would be the difference for the Soo Thunderbirds in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action on Saturday night.

A goal by Lucas Theriault  4:28 into the final period and another by Camaryn Baber just over five minutes later lifted the Thunderbirds to a 3-1 road victory over the Powassan Voodoos in a battle of the NOJHL’s top two teams.

Baber’s goal, his second of the night and ninth of the season, came 18 seconds after Brandon MacKinnon scored for the Voodoos to pull the home team to within a goal with nearly 11 minutes still to play in the contest.

Thunderbirds goaltender Brandon Gordon finished the night with 37 saves, including 17 in the third period.

Julian Galloway stopped 32 shots for the Voodoos.

The Thunderbirds improve to 25-8-2-1 with the victory and sit three points ahead of the Blind River Beavers atop the NOJHL’s West Division.

The loss drops Powassan’s record to 28-4-1-2.

The Thunderbirds wrap the weekend up on Sunday evening with a road game against the French River Rapids.
