An early lead and a pair of goals from Nicolas Case were the difference for the Soo Thunderbirds on Sunday afternoon.

Less than 24 hours after dropping a 5-3 decision at home to the Powassan Voodoos, the Thunderbirds went on the road and picked up a 3-1 victory over the Espanola Express on Sunday, giving the team three points from a busy three-game weekend that saw the team drop an overtime decision at home on Friday night.

Nolan Ford got the Thunderbirds on the board early with his first Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League goal 2:13 into the contest.

Case’s two goals would come in the second period with the second just under six minutes after Espanola had cut the Thunderbirds lead to 2-1.

Both goaltenders were busy in the game with Thunderbirds netminder Brandon Gordon stopping 38 shots. Espanola’s Jacob Hutchings stopped 39 shots in the loss.

Mackenzie Schopfer had the lone goal for the Express.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Sept. 27 with a home game at the John Rhodes Community Centre against Espanola.
