Mother nature continues to reek havoc on the Women’s Hockey League as the season hits the stretch drive.

Warm weather once again forced the league to scrap Monday night’s line-up at the outdoor facility in Echo Bay and revamp the upcoming schedule.

Country Way did grab sole possession of first place with a victory on Sunday while Crawford’s Canines also used a victory to jump into the race for a regular season championship

The following is a complete recap of week nine action and a revised schedule provided by the WHL’s Lorie Springall:

WEEK # 9 - February 29th & March 1st

Once again warm weather caused the cancellation of Monday night's games in Echo Bay. The facility's natural ice surface, which has been in excellent shape all season, is experiencing a melt down requiring league organizers to reschedule games. Hopefully colder weather will arrive later in the week and next Monday's games will go as planned.

Fortunately, Sunday's games at McMeeken went on as scheduled as Country Way and Crawford's Canines each picked up a win.

Country Way defeated Algoma Insurance 4-1, ending Algoma's four-game undefeated streak. Four different players scored for Country Way including Andrea Moraca, Sherry "Sniper" Boston, Christine Trivers and Kristy Kernaghen. Trivers, Brenda Frey and Crystal Earl each earned one assist.

Scoring for Algoma Insurance was Theresa Glover. Julie Hodkinson had the only assist.

Crawford's pulled off a thrilling 3-2 win over Palmer Paving in the afternoon's second game. Christine Robertson scored the winner with 1:11 left to play, her second game winning goal this year. Robertson also had one assist. Donna Smith scored her first goal of the season and rookie Gillian Eccles scored her first career goal for the Canines.

Lori Bonnell and Lori Swan replied for the Paving Crew. Amber Lahti and Debbie Desgagne had one assist each.

The league has acquired ice time in Desbarats and the Rankin Arena to accommodate the revised schedule. Please note the change in game times and locations for the remainder of the season. The revised schedule begins this Sunday, March 7th at Desbarats and McMeeken arenas.
