NEWS RELEASE
UNITED WAY
*************************
In May of 2018, Sonny Spina cycled 283 kilometres over two days to raise funds and awareness for the United Way of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District. Pedals for Possibilities was a district-wide event that engaged thousands of individuals.
With local partnerships, the event team was able to promote to local schools the work of the United Way and educate youth on poverty in the community.
The Winmar Youth Engagement Grant was created to get schools excited about the event, and to be creative with their fundraising ideas.
“Raising money was only half of our goal,” said Campaign Chair Sonny Spina. “We wanted to reach our young audience to teach them about the United Way and how they could get involved.” This grant works as a continuation of the event to learn more about local charities and building a stronger community.
On May 17, 22 schools took part in Pedals for Possibilities. Sonny and his team travelled over 100 kilometres in Sault Ste. Marie, stopping at these schools to hear their cheers and learn about their fundraising initiatives.
Students took part in various activities such as a Fitness day, Chuck the Duck competition, Ice Cream day, school dances, riding a stationary bike during school, and riding with Sonny on the event day.
The Pedals for Possibilities team is excited to announce ten schools that will receive the Winmar Youth Engagement Grant of $283! The grants will go towards a new or current project the school is taking part in, with connection to the work of the United Way.
