LAVAL, Que. — The Montreal Canadiens' organization released prospect Martin Reway on Sunday following a mutual agreement to terminate his contract.
Larry Carriere, the general manager of Montreal's American Hockey League team, the Laval Rocket, announced Sunday that Reway will continue to pursue his professional career in Europe.
The 22-year-old forward from Slovakia was selected in the fourth round by the Canadiens (116th overall) at the 2013 draft. He played five games with the Rocket this season, recording two assists.
"We discussed some options, and we advised Martin that we were totally dedicated to continue working with him to help regain his physical condition and remain with the Laval Rocket," Carriere said in a statement. "We agreed to give Martin time to reflect, and he made the decision to return home. At that point, we mutually agreed that terminating his contract was the best option for both parties.
"We wish Martin the best of luck in the future."
Reway missed all of last season recovering from a heart problem, which doctors found during a routine checkup a week before he was to leave for the Canadiens' rookie camp last summer.
Reway helped lead underdog Slovakia to a bronze medal at the 2015 world junior championship.
