SYDNERY, Australia — Canada's men's rugby sevens team lost its opening match of the HSBC World Series on Friday, falling 52-5 to Scotland.

Max McFarland had three tries for No. 13 Scotland, which erupted for 31 points in the second half.

Jamie Farndale, Gavin Lowe, Glenn Bryce and substitute Sean Kennedy had the other tries.

Nathan Hirayama had the lone try for Canada in the fifth minute of the match.

The Canadians, ranked seventh in the overall standings, face No. 5 Australia and the 12th-place United States on Saturday in Pool D play in advance of the playoff rounds.

The Sydney tournament is the third stop of the HSBC World Series tour.

Canada is trying to build on its fourth-place finish in the last World Series stop in Cape Town in December.
