Canadian women to play Russia for bronze at Sydney Sevens

SYDNEY, Australia — There will be no repeat for Canada at the Sydney Sevens.

The Canadian women's team and defending tournament champions will play for bronze at the World Series event after falling 26-0 on Saturday in the semifinals against New Zealand.

Canada will play Russia in the third-place match on Sunday. New Zealand will play Olympic champion Australia for gold.

Canada earned its place in the tournament's final four with a 28-12 victory over France earlier Saturday in the quarterfinals.

The Canadians finished first in Pool C after going 3-0 during the opening day of competition at the 12-nation tournament.

Seven members of the Canadian roster are holdovers from the bronze-winning side at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
