May 10, 1934 – April 18, 2025

Passed away peacefully at North Shore Health Network in Blind River on April 18, 2025, in his 91st year. Loving husband of Nora Bell (nee Scott) of 69 years. Cherished son of David and Ella Bell (both deceased). Cherished son-in-law of R. Poynter and Gertrude Scott (both deceased). Predeceased by siblings Merton Bell (Marjorie), Elsie Bell, Leona Newcombe (late Don) and Gerald Bell (late Norma) as well as siblings-in- law Richard “Dick” Scott (late Pat) and Elizabeth Betty Nyman (late Herman). Lovingly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. Chosen father of Phyllis Murphy (nee Laderoute).

Earl married the love of his life, Nora, on October 28, 1955, and they enjoyed a beautiful marriage of 69 years. They had no children of their own, although over the years they were constantly surrounded by many nieces, nephews and friends’ children who brought them much laughter and joy. Many remain close to this day.

Earl spent most of his successful career as the Office Manager at Ontario Hydro. Outside of work he had many hobbies and talents.

Earl’s faith was very important to him; he was an active member of St. Andrew’s United Church in Blind River for many years where he was a choir member, played the keyboard and volunteered at various events.

Earl was an avid golfer and curler; he enjoyed snowmobiling and fishing. Later in life he discovered quieter past times like gardening and bird watching; he even took up drawing and painting and humbly boasts many prints in his name!

Earl was an accomplished musician playing multiple instruments all by ear; he was most well-known for his fiddle. His first band was the Iron Bridge Rhythm Pals and over the years he joined other bands like the Jammers. He also accompanied many musicians. If you heard music in Blind River, it was not unusual to see Earl there playing, with Nora listening by his side. Many jam sessions were had at the Riverside, Iron Horse, Legion, Curling Club, or anywhere the music crowd was gathering! His music brought joy and fostered many friendships over the years.

Earl’s proudest accomplishment was being inducted into the Great Northern Opry (Northern Ontario Country Music Association). He would often recall that event and show everyone his cherished memorabilia, his signature ring and violin pendant.

Earl had many philanthropic interests and supported many charities over the years. A heartfelt thanks goes out to the NSHN - Blind River medical staff and Golden Birches for the excellent care Earl received during his lengthy stay. Donations in memory of Earl can be made to NSHN - Blind River www.nshnfoundation.care and are appreciated by the family.
