With broken hearts, we announce the passing of Merlin Orville Bolton at the age of 83 on June 23, 2025.

Merl now joins his loving wife of 57 years, Arla Joan Bolton. Their enduring love and partnership were a constant source of strength and comfort to their family and friends. Merl was the proud father and lifelong hero of Eric Bolton and Pam McDonald (Matt). He shared a deeply special relationship with his only granddaughter, Kenna (Kile), who brought immense joy and pride into his life. Merl was overjoyed at the news that he would become a great-grandfather this summer—a milestone he was very much looking forward to. Born in 1942, on Cockburn Island, Merl spent his early years in Dayton, ON. He was the beloved son of late Donald and Henrietta Bolton, and shared an especially close bond with his father, a relationship that shaped much of who he was. Merl was the beloved brother of Donna (late George, late Jim), Joan (late Gord), late Lyla, Blake (Karen), Sheila (Paul), Heather (late Jim), and late Glenda (Steve). Cherished uncle to many. Merl was the cherished son-in-law of late Jack and Helen Trowbridge and a loved brother-in-law to late Ronald(Susan), late Kenny (late Rose), late Johnny (Marielle) and Alan (Jean). His loyalty and strength made him not just family, but a true friend to those who knew him.

We take comfort in knowing that Merl is now back behind the wheel, telling stories and sharing laughs with his friend, the late Bob Jones. The bond Merl shared with Roberta Harrison (Grant), Duane Jones (Theresa), and the late Keith Jones (Arlene)—was deeply meaningful to him. Their connection went far beyond family ties, rooted in years of shared laughter, support, and love.

Merl will be fondly remembered for his gift of conversation—he could talk to anyone, anywhere—and for his unforgettable storytelling, with tales that always seemed too good to be true… yet somehow were. His laugh was infectious, his smile warm and welcoming, and his presence lit up every room.

Merl was a proud truck driver for over 65 years, earning a spotless record with no accidents or incidents—an incredible achievement in itself. He was a multi-year truck rodeo champion. Merl’s work ethic was truly unmatched. His life was full of adventure, the kind most only dream of.

Merl often joked that he preferred animals to people—and it seemed the animals felt the same way. His quiet understanding and gentle nature made him a favourite among four-legged companions.

Above all, Merl was a man of absolute honesty and integrity. He lived by his word, stood by his values, and carried those principles with him to the very end. You won’t meet another like him.

Special thanks to Tyler from the Community Paramedic Program, Tina his Family Health Nurse and Dr. Woolner and Erin at SAH Emergency Room.
