1935 – 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Leo. Cherished husband and best friend of Rose Meraglia Caicco, for 61 years. Precious father of Louise Caicco Tett (Deron) and Lorrie-Ann Watts (nee Caicco). Much loved Nonno of Jacqueline Tett, Jessica Tett (Steven Saccucci), and Jasmine Yue Watts. Leo was the beloved son of Antonio Caicco and Luisa Caputo of Cleto, Cosenza, Italia. Leo’s early years were lived in Calabria, Italy, with his siblings: the late Angelo Caicco (Isolina Tosolini), the late Filomena Caicco (late Francesco Meraglia), and Maria Caicco (late Arnaldo Longo). Leo was the beloved son-in-law of Giovanni and Linda Meraglia (nee Provenzano). He is survived by his brother-in-law Gennaro Meraglia “Jimmy” (Gloria), John Meraglia, and sister-in-law Yolanda Pasiak (Bill). Leo was the fun and prized zio/uncle to two generations, in Canada and in Italy.
He arrived in Halifax on January 12, 1954, in search of opportunity and to be reunited with his sister Filomena. In the early years, he worked jobs in Sault Ste. Marie, and Ottawa, and ultimately secured work as a welder at Algoma Steel, for 35 years. To his final days, he vividly and fondly recalled his work on the #7 blast furnace. He was a proud member of the Field Forces and rarely missed a reunion once he retired.
Leo had a strong connection to family, both in Canada and in Italy. He took every opportunity to visit cousins in the US, southern Ontario, and Italy. His connections live on, in each of his family members.
Friends and family are invited to visit at Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758) on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Funeral Mass to be held at 12:00 noon at St. Gregory’s Church with Father Trevor Scarfone officiating. Entombment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorial donations can be made to the St. Gregory’s Church Building Fund, SAH Foundation or the charity of your choice.
The family thanks the staff and residents at the Davey Home, Driftwood Beach 2. You created a home for Leo and supported the family too. And to dad’s special friend Donna, who visited often and gave us much-needed family time. www.northwoodfuneral.com
