Passed away peacefully at Health Sciences North in Sudbury on December 8, 2024 at the age of 93.
Born in Fort Augustus, P.E.I. on October 15, 1931 to Annie and James Callaghan. Joe is remembered for his quick wit, tremendous work ethic, welcoming demeanour and love of family. He was a devoted husband, brother and friend. His commitment to helping others was second to none. Predeceased by his parents, beloved wife Margaret (Peggy) and siblings, Maurice (Cora), Mary (Johnny), Ernestine (Wendell), Edwin (Velma), Francis (Sadie) and Vincent. Although he spent many years living away, P.E.I. was always in his heart.
After helping on the family farm, Joe moved to Ontario to work at MacDonnell Douglas Aircraft. After a successful career, he and Peggy settled in Elliot Lake. Left to mourn are siblings, Shirley Knox (Gary), Donna Callaghan, Colleen MacRae (late Joe), along with numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Ruth Millette for her friendship during Joe’s final years. Many thanks to the staff at St. Joseph’s Manor for their wonderful care, support and kindness towards Joe at such a difficult time.
At a later date, there will be a celebration of life and funeral masses at St. Bernadette’s Parish, Elliot Lake and St. Patrick's Parish, Fort Augustus, P.E.I. where he will be interned. Memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Society would be greatly appreciated. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Elliot Lake Funeral Chapel & Cremation Centre (36 Ontario Avenue).
