It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Clair, in his 70th year. Clair was surrounded at home by his loving wife, Soney (Sandy) and favourite 4-legged friend, Yogi, who was never far from his side.
Loving husband of Sandy Irwin. Son of Lawrence and Catherine Campbell. Brother of the late Holly Davis (Ross) and Alex Campbell (Kathy). Son-in-law of the late Arden Irwin (Judy Connell). Brother-in-law of Tammy Irwin, Heather Irwin and Terry Irwin (Debbie). Special uncle of Karli Campbell Dionisi (Mitchell), Michael Campbell (Brianna Niro), Martin Davis (Judit), Jeremy Davis (Bryanne), Ashleigh Irwin Cairns (Mark), Sean Irwin (Kassandra), Katie Irwin, Andrew Ault and great uncle of many.
Clair was a man of deep compassion, unwavering generosity, and with a quiet thoughtfulness, he touched the lives of all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Though his time with us was not nearly long enough, we were profoundly blessed by the years we shared together.
Clair was an outstanding athlete of Sault Collegiate Institute, carrying his basketball skills to the University of Saskatchewan. He started his teaching career at Spiritwood, Saskatchewan before returning home where he continued his career with the Algoma District School Board.
A true sports enthusiast, becoming a recognized referee at the high school, community and international level for basketball and later refereeing volleyball after his retirement. Clair loved the camaraderie and life lessons sports provided, building relationships with peers and coaches that are remembered to this day. As a teacher, coach and lifelong student, recently working towards a second degree at Algoma University, he was always eager to share his wisdom with patience and kindness. A storyteller at heart, he captivated those around him with tales that brought both laughter and reflection.
Clair’s greatest joy was his faith and family. He was the glue and the anchor that kept family together, a true testament to the bond he shared with everyone.
Clair met Sandy later in life, where they would build their life together on St. Joseph Island. Clair’s legacy of love and kindness will live on in all those he touched, and all the hearts he left behind. We will cherish his memories and celebrate a life that was well lived.
A private family service will be held. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Richard’s Landing Children’s Library, Matthews Memorial Hospital Association or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
