May 31, 1929 - May 29, 2018

John Joseph Culina passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the Algoma Residential Community Hospice on Tuesday May 29, 2018, in his 89th year.  John was born in the west end of Sault Ste. Marie on May 31, 1929, in a boarding house owned by the Culina and Maich families that would become the New Toronto Hotel. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Jean; cherished by his daughters, Brenda Chaput (Jim) and Paula McComb (Jim); adored by his grandchildren, Mallory and Brittany Chaput and Sarah McComb; and fondly regarded by many other family members and close friends. He was the son of the late Joseph and Danica (Benec) Culina and brother of the late Eva Krmpotich (late Louie), late Tommy Culina (late Isabel), Annie Pesuvani (late Mike), the late Andrew Culina, Walter Culina (Margaret), and the late Janet Culina. John was a life long Saultite with strong ties to family and friends in the community, only going away to pursue his undergraduate and law school education.  He cherished his friendships cultivated during his childhood, regularly meeting with the ROMEOs for dinners and coffee times. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Pathways Retirement Home, Bob from We Care, and to all of the residents who made up his Pathways family. Thank you to the Sault Area Hospital and the Algoma Residential Community Hospice for the compassion and care he received.  A special thank you to Dr. Gravelle, Dr. Fera, Dr. Apostle, Dr. Hackett, and nurse Bret. At John’s request, there will be no funeral; however, a celebration of life will take place for close friends and family on his birthday.  If desired, memorial donations to ARCH or the Sault Area Hospital Foundation would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to O’Sullivan Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 215 St. James St. 705-759-8456.
