Judah Lawrence (Larry) Gringorten passed away suddenly on April 10, 2025. Loving father and father-in-law to Michael (Mickey) Gringorten and Dr. Leann Knight. Cherished Grandfather to Noah and Atley Gringorten. Devoted son of the late Morris and late Pearl Gringorten (nee Berman). Dear brother and brother-in-law of the late Barry and Marion Gringorten, Carla and the late Alain Baudot and Reesa Gringorten.
Dr. Lawrence Gringorten received his Master’s Degree at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and became a Research Scientist after graduating with a PhD in Entomology from the University of Toronto. His first job post-graduation took him to Vienna, Austria where he worked for the International Atomic Energy Agency. Before returning to Canada, Larry’s career led him to work in Indonesia and Zimbabwe as an expert in insect control developing many of the protocols still in use today.
Larry very much identified with his research, publishing numerous papers, attending and presenting at international conferences, and diligently spending hours at his Lab at Natural Resources Canada in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, frequently working through the night ensuring that nothing got overlooked and all variables were studied, measured and quantified.
He was an avid cyclist, skier, snowshoer, and hiker (an officer for the local Trans-Canada Trail club). Larry was happiest immersing himself in nature. He was a man who appreciated the simple pleasures that life has to offer: a fine meal, a sunset over the shores of Lake Superior or riding his bike in the Sault area.
Larry was a very unique soul. He left an indelible impact on those who were fortunate to cross his path. He was in equal measures kind, generous and authentic with a warm sense of humour. He lived a life of austerity because he preferred to collect memories, not things. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and the community of Sault Ste. Marie.
Funeral service will be held at O’Sullivan Funeral Home (215 St. James St, SSM) on Tuesday April 22nd at 1:00pm. Brief burial service at Greenwood Cemetery will commence for 2pm. Refreshments to be served following the burial at O’Sullivan Funeral Home following for 3pm.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Larry’s honour can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Canadian Cancer Society or the Jewish National Fund.
