Fred was born in Sault Ste. Marie, where he spent most of his life and was the youngest of a large, lively Irish family in the city’s Westend. Fred and his twin brother Pat got into lots of shenanigans, hanging out at the Soo locks and he would regale us with many stories about their formative years. From the time he was young he worked at Algoma Steel and was a loyal and popular workmate to other steelworkers. In retirement he enjoyed cooking for the family and sharing a friendly rivalry with his brother Peter for the best flower garden.
Fred participated in many sports including curling, softball, tennis, golf and rowing, but his greatest gift was his love for people. He will be missed by his family, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Much thanks to the Anishnabe Long Term Care Centre, Notre-Dame-du-Nord, Quebec and Extendicare Van Daele Manor for their kindness and compassion.
A Memorial Mass will be on Thursday June 6, 2024, at 11:00am at St. Gerard Majella Church (211 Pentagon), followed by a reception in the Parish Hall after which, Fred’s ashes will be placed in their columbarium at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the St. Gerard Majella Building Fund would be appreciated by the family. Payable by cheque.
The Heaney clan gathers around Fred’s spirit, warming up their fiddles and singing a celtic song.
