The family of John Lougheed are saddened with his passing on Monday, May 5, 2025. He was the son of the late Hugh and Amy Lougheed.
John spent much of his youth in Sault Ste. Marie before attending University in London Ontario. His studies led him to a 33-year career teaching English, initially in London and for nearly 30 years at Barrie North Collegiate.
John was predeceased by his parents and sister Margaret Hart (late Frank). He is survived by his children, Hugh (Laura), Kathleen (John), David (Connie) and Kristopher (Marianna). His grandchildren Donald, Matthew, Mitchell, Joshua, Jeremy, Andrew, Benjamin, Isabella and Mattias. And his great-grandson Everett. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
After some years of retirement in Barrie, John returned to the familiar surroundings of the Sault area. He enjoyed summers at Blueberry and Mark’s Bay and escaped a few winters in Texas and Arizona.
Dad’s journey for the past five years has been a testament to the care and compassion of many family, friends and health professionals. His children would like to thank his nieces Carolyn Hart (Martin Johnson) and Kathryn Armstrong. Thanks are not enough for the love and support you have given. Many friends supported Dad along the way, Leona Knight, neighbour Dorothy and others with whom he shared many stories of past times in the Sault. His last few months were happily spent at the Windsor Place Retirement Residence, where he met new friends and received wonderful care from the nursing and support workers.
He grew up looking out over the St. Mary’s River and was able to spend his final months doing the same.
Thanks to the health professionals for his care from the early days of his health challenges. In particular, thanks to Dr. Gonzalez-Moreno, Hopper, Kargbo, Schamp, Fera, Apostle and the wonderful nurses on 3C. Special thanks to the staff of the Algoma Residential Community Hospice for making Dad’s final days comfortable and peaceful.
At Dad’s request, there will be no memorial service. Cremation has taken place. His ashes will be interred with his parents at a private family gathering at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) would be appreciated. Online condolences and tributes can be made and found at www.arthurfuneralhome.com.
