MACLEOD, Jean (nee MacIntosh)

Jean (nee MacIntosh), 90, of Don Mills, Ontario, passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 3, 2016. Jean was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on December 29, 1925, daughter of James MacIntosh and Olive MacIntosh (nee Clark), sister to James and Norman. She graduated from Sault Ste. Marie Collegiate Institute and then earned a teaching certificate at the Toronto Teachers College.  She used her earnings as a primary school teacher to go on and earn a Bachelor’s of Arts degree from Victoria University in the University of Toronto (Vic4T9).  While at Vic, Jean met Donald Murdoch MacLeod whom she married on July 22, 1950; they were married 66 years. Following her marriage, Jean continued to work as a teacher in the Winnipeg, Montreal Protestant and North York school systems before starting a family. She remained an educator to the core, shown in her continued  life of service and commitment to education through involvement in the United Way, the Toronto YWCA and above all the North York University Women’s Club, where she remained an active member and founded the Status of Women group. Jean was an accomplished target shooter and tennis player in her youth, an avid lifelong canoeist and an eager traveler with a passion for art history. She also enjoyed reading, knitting and sewing – often together – and maintained a keen interest in current affairs, social justice and women’s issues. However, above all else, Jean was a devoted mother and grandmother. Jean is survived by her beloved husband; her children, Peter, Scott, Rory, Ian and David; daughters-in-law Catherine and Joy;  grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Caitlin, Meghan, Simon, Rory, Brenna and James; her brother Norman of Sault Ste. Marie and the rest of her family and friends. A private family service will be held on Wednesday, November 9th, followed by interment at St. James Cemetery, Toronto. In loving memory of Jean and in honour of her lifelong attachment to Victoria College and her commitment to education, the family wishes to establish a scholarship in her name at Victoria College.
