MASSICOTTE, Mary BIO

The children of Mary Massicotte announce with heartfelt sorrow the passing of their beloved mother.  She was predeceased by her loving husband, Willie Massicotte and was the dedicated, selfless mother of three children; Patti Massicotte (Bill Nolan), Kathi Rankin (Bill Wolowich) and Michael Massicotte.  She was the loving grandmother of Kyle (Erin), Lauren, Michaela and Liam Nolan; Justin and Jessica Rankin and Lexie Massicotte.  She was the cherished great grandmother of Rowen Rankin.  She is predeceased by her brother Richard Whalen (Marg) their children Susan, Janet, Edward and Carol; and predeceased by her brother Robert Whalen.  Mary held a very special place in her heart for inherited nieces, the Marshall girls; Margie, Joanie, Betty, Dorothy, Bonnie (deceased) and Sheila (deceased).  Mary, an easterner originally from Fredericton, New Brunswick, was a brilliant entomologist who held degrees from University of New Brunswick and Western University, where she received the Governor General’s award for the highest graduating marks.  She moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the “Soo”, and was one of the first to work with the electron microscope at the “Bug Lab”, as she so fondly referred to the Insect Research Laboratory.  She soon met a young budding accountant (Willie) in the Soo and they were married for 59 wonderful years.  Mary was a long-time member of the Catholic Women’s League, loved her long time bridge friends and cared for Willie during his long illness.  She was ahead of her time as an educated woman and encouraged her children to always shoot for their dreams.  She was forever dedicated to her family and friends and will be remembered as a kind, caring, gentle soul. Friends are invited to St. Jerome’s Catholic Church on Thursday, November 30, 2017 between 11:45 am and 12:45 pm with the Funeral Mass to take place at 1 pm.  Rev. Pat Woods officiating.  Memorial contributions to SAH Foundation or ARCH would be appreciated by the family. The family would like to thank Dr. Bowen, Dr. Apostle, Dr. Bragaglia, ARCH and the staff of 3C room 307 for all the kindness and care.  (Arrangements entrusted to the Arthur Funeral Home – Barton & Kiteley Chapel 492 Wellington St. E. 705-759-2522).
