1941 – May 14, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Larry Lawrence Mauro—beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend—who passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, at Sault Area Hospital, at the age of 83.

Born in 1941, Larry was a proud lifelong resident of Sault Ste. Marie. The son of Trent and Beatrice, he was one of eight children and shared a particularly close bond with his siblings Joan and Cathy, who will miss him dearly.

Larry dedicated over 30 years of his life to working at Algoma Steel, where he was respected for his strong work ethic and quiet camaraderie. Following his retirement, he found new purpose in a place close to his heart—the Soo Pee Wee Arena. There, he owned and operated the Pro Shop, generously sharing his time, skill, and kindness with generations of young athletes and their families. He treated each with the same care and devotion he gave his own, earning the fond nickname “Larry from the Pee Wee.”

Larry is now reunited with his beloved wife of 43 years, Carol Ann Mauro, with whom he shared a beautiful life full of love and laughter. He will be deeply missed by his three devoted sons—Paul (Jody), Derek, and Joel (Kelly)—and by his cherished granddaughters, Megan, Paige, and Madeline Mauro.

Larry adored his granddaughters. Some of their fondest memories include helping him at the Pro Shop—engraving trophies, sharpening skates—or heading out together for another trip to Tim Hortons for a treat. His bond with Madeline was especially close. She was his “Right Hand Lady,” a title he gave her with pride and affection, and she remained lovingly by his side through it all.

Larry lived a simple, meaningful life centered around what mattered most: Family ,The New York Yankees and the community. His gentle spirit, generous heart, and steady presence will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Larry’s personal support worker, Rachel Mainprize, and to Sarah Solomon for their compassionate care in his final days. Deepest gratitude also goes to Dr. Waqas, Dr. Sarah White, Dr. Booth, and the incredible nurses of 3C at Sault Area Hospital for their kindness and support.

A private family service will be held, with a celebration of life to follow at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations (payable by cheque or online) to Soo Pee Wee Hockey Arena would be greatly appreciated.
