With heavy hearts, the family of Calvin G. Murphy born May 27, 1938, in Parkinson Township, Iron Bridge, Ontario announces his peaceful passing on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Extendicare Van Daele, where he left dementia behind. He was just days away from celebrating his 87th birthday.

Cal is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 65 years, MaryAnne. He was an awesome Dad to Trish Furkey (Chris) and the late Shelley. A cherished Papa to Jaimie Furkey (Ryan McCaig), Kelvin Bordin (Marisa), and Kaysie Bordin.

He is predeceased by his brother Dunc Murphy (late Pauline) and sister Bertha Morrison (late Garnet), and will be deeply missed by his nieces, nephews, extended family, and many close friends. He was the son of the late William and Margaret Murphy (Berry).

Cal lived life to the fullest and was always ready to lend a helping hand. A longtime business owner and proud “Arctic Cat/Suzuki” guy, he and MaryAnne enjoyed a successful career leading up to their retirement in 1995. In earlier years, he loved snowmachine racing, camping with family, hunting with his buddies, and most of all—having a good time!

Even in retirement, Cal kept busy. He was a jack-of-all-trades, always fixing things, tackling “honey-do” lists, enjoying snowmobiling and hunting, and sipping the occasional rum & water. After retiring, he made a permanent home at Big Basswood Lake, enjoying the good life before eventually returning to Sault Ste. Marie to live out his remaining years.

Cal spent the last four years in the compassionate care of the incredible staff at Extendicare Van Daele—his second family—who provided love, laughs, dignity, and comfort every day. The family extends heartfelt thanks for their amazing care.

In keeping with Cal’s wishes, he was cremated and there will be no service or celebration of life. Next time you raise a glass, think of him - that would truly make him happy.

Donations to the Alzheimer Society of Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District would be greatly appreciated by the family. (payable online https://alzheimer.ca/algoma/en/take-action/donate or by cheque)
